Understanding what all those Straps are for
While most horse people are familiar with what parts make up a bridle, it is remarkable how few truly understand what goes into it. With so many parts, it is no wonder that people don’t consider the reasons for them. In fact, it is not unusual to see someone throw together a simple bridle that does little more than hold the bit in the horse’s mouth, and ride off without a care.
So what are all those straps, and what are they for?
Probably the most often misunderstood part of the bridle is the noseband. Many people believe that the noseband is there to hold the horse’s mouth closed. Of course, if you look at the positioning of the noseband, it is quickly evident that no matter how tight you fasten it, the noseband could never hold the mouth shut.
Interestingly enough, the noseband is the least necessary part of the bridle. In fact, many western bridles skip it altogether. With very little actual functionality, the cavasson noseband is purely there for looks! With varieties ranging from broad to narrow, and from raised to flat, riders choose a look that best suits their horse. While there are specialty nosebands that are more than just decoration, the average bridle’s noseband isn’t really necessary at all.
So if the noseband is useless, what about the browband? While it often makes a fashion statement, much like the noseband, the browband is an essential part of the bridle. Without the browband, the crown piece would slip back down the horse’s neck, pulling on the bit, and making the bridle uncomfortable for the horse. While some western bridles only use a half browband, circling around one ear, the purpose is the same.
Another strap that sometimes seems useless is the throatlatch. While it seems obvious that it is there to hold the bridle on, generally the bridle will stay in place without the throatlatch at all. Basically it acts as a safety net, to hold the bridle in place should something happen that threatens to pull the bridle over the horse’s ears.
The cheek pieces have another obvious use. They act as the connection between the crown piece and the bit. But why do they need to be separate from the crown piece? Without separate check pieces it would be difficult to adjust the length of the bridle for different horses. With two adjustable cheek pieces, it is possible to fine tune the tightness of the bit in the horse’s mouth. A single buckle on the side would not allow for this fine tuning.
Of course the reins require no explanation. But, do most reins have a braided appearance? Is this more fashion? No. The laced part of the reins is there to offer the rider a better grip. When a horse becomes sweaty, the reins can become quite slippery. Some reins have alternate forms of grips such as rubber coating, small crosspieces or actual braiding of the leather. It is possible to find smooth reins, but they are uncommon.
So now you know the basics of what makes up a bridle. Each strap has its unique purpose, even if it is a frivolous one.

Curb Bit – Understanding Curb Bit
A curb bit is a type of bit, which is part of the bridle that goes in the mouth of the horse, that uses lever action. It consists of mouthpiece, curb chain and shank. It has one ring on each side of the purchase arm of the shank and one on the bottom for the lever arm of the shank.
It works on several parts of the horse’s head and mouth, which differs it from the snaffle bit. The bit mouthpiece is the part of a curb bit where the curb chain, shanks and straps are attached. It rests on the bars of the mouth of the horse in the sensitive interdental space where there are no teeth.
It acts on the bars, tongue and roof of the mouth of the horse. The curb chain, which is the flat linked chain or strap, is attached on either side of the mouthpiece near the corners of the mouth. This places pressure from the shank to the chin groove. A curb chain is used to control the lever action of the curb bit.
Also, it helps keep the bit steady and in place within the mouth helping to hold the lip strap in place . The bit shank refers to the side piece or cheekpiece of a curb bit. It adds leverage and place force on the poll through the crownpiece of the bridle. Depending on the length of the curb’s bit shank, the curb can amplify rein pressure several times over.
Shanks are generally made of metal and are designed either straight or curved. Curb bits come in different styles such as Weymouth curb, grazing bit and spade bit, which are the most common types. A Weymouth curb features a straight shank and a solid mouthpiece with a low port. A grazing bit has shanks that are turned back, generally, just about ninety degrees. A spade bit is a vaquero designed curb bit with straight, highly decorated shanks and a mouthpiece with straight bar, a narrow port with cricket and a spoon.
The severity a curb bit can cause relies on several variables, such as the length of the shank. The longer the shank, the more leverage is formed and therefore the more terrible the bit can be. Another variable that may add to the severity is the size of the port, which is the area in the middle of the mouthpiece that is generally slightly raised. The higher the port, the more terrible is the bit.
The tightness or looseness of the curb chain also is affecting the scale of the bit. The tighter the curb chain, the more pressure will be felt by the horse when the rider uses the rein. When the chain is tightened, the shank doesn’t come back as far and more pressure is felt earlier with this adjustment. However, when the curb chain is loose, the shank comes back further when the rider pulls the rein but the horse does not feel the force on the chin area as shortly or as much.

What western bridle should I buy?
Hi, so my horse and I are going to begin 4-H.
I would like to get into western trail class, and walk/jog class, and some gymkhana.
I am a beginner, and my horse is 21 so i am wondering what bridle i should buy.
At the moment I ride english and my horse uses a D snaffle bit and english bridle.
What should I buy for beginning western shows/practice?
Please also include some examples for sale.
I want to buy it on ebay, so if you could please give me a link of something that would be useful.

Out of the links you posted, get either the first or last one, whichever one matches your saddle. The black one looks dull, but I’m sure it’s nothing some conditioner couldn’t fix. Weaver bridles are pretty good though and they’re cheap. They sell leather ones. If you’re going to be showing then don’t get nylon.
I have a Circle Y headstall with silver. I really like it. They sell bridles though for trail classes and such without silver and they’re cheaper.
As for the bit, it really depends on a horse. I ride two horses who go english in a snaffle bit, and for western they use a 7″ shank 1″ ported solid bit. It’s wonderful for getting them to neck rein and riding with really loose rein. My horse uses a kimberwicke for english, and I put him in this bit with an added chain. This bit can be harsh, but not unless you make it that way. If he already knows how to go off the rein though, you can just keep him in a snaffle.
